Sacramental Preparation
Parishes in the Diocese of Phoenix operate under a restored order for the reception of Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and First Eucharist). Given this understanding, it is the recommendation of the diocese that a child who is baptized as an infant experience a foundation formation year before preparing for additional Sacraments, usually first grade. During the Second Vatican Council (Vatican II), the age of reason was determined to be the age 7. For this reason, First Reconciliation is celebrated during the second year of formation, usually second grade. Confirmation and First Eucharist are celebrated together to complete the initiation started at Baptism during the following year, usually third grade.
Just as you would help your child prepare for school by sending them to Kindergarten, our Faith Formation classes offer a year for Kindergarten-age children to become accustomed to the formation process before this recommended timeline begins. Please contact Dcn. Steve or Shannon if you have questions about how your child might be welcomed into this process.
